Prevent Disease with Dog Teeth Cleaning in Calgary with Our Dog Dentist

Routine examinations by a veterinarian are very important for good dental health. It’s important to have a dog dentist look inside your pet’s mouth routinely to try to catch any dental disease early. At Barlow Trail Animal Hospital we are also committed to giving owners advice on the best way to care for their pets’ teeth. If you come in for a wellness exam one of our doctors may recommend a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia. We clean your pet’s teeth like your dentist cleans your teeth. Since your pet is under anesthesia, we can even get underneath the gums and in other hard-to-reach places. It is important to continue brushing pet’s teeth and providing dental chews to keep dental disease from coming back after a professional cleaning. At Barlow Trail Animal Hospital we are a close-knit team that remember and care about each pet and owner that come through our doors. We know your pets are part of your family so we are committed to giving every pet owner time and attention so we understand your concerns and leave you feeling confident and assured.

Anesthesia keeps your pet free of pain during the dental procedure and allows your veterinarian to fully inspect the teeth and remove tartar from under the gums. During anesthesia, a soft plastic tube is inserted into the trachea (the main airway in the throat) to support the patient’s breathing. Placement of the tracheal tube also prevents inhalation of bacteria that are aerosolized during the dental cleaning.

A gentle dental with your groomer is an anesthetic-free teeth cleaning procedure performed on your pet while they are awake. Removing abundant scale has value in reducing oral bacteria and slowing gum disease, however, it is difficult, often impossible to reach under the gum line or treat the interior side of teeth. Anesthetic-free dentistry can provide an improvement in the appearance of the teeth visible to the client but should not be considered complete prophylaxis.

A dental cleaning under anesthetic performed by a veterinarian includes complete scaling of the crowns and under the gum line of each individual tooth and polishing of all surfaces. Examination of their oral cavity, including an evaluation of their tongue, gums, lips, and teeth is performed.  Probing of each tooth to assess their roots can be completed with anesthesia with no discomfort or stress to your pet. Dental x-rays will be taken to evaluate problems below the gum line such as infected or fractured teeth. Regular examinations will allow your veterinarian to assess whether more complete dental treatment is needed to keep your pet healthy and comfortable.
