Tips On How To Keep Your Pets Safe In Winter

Did you know that the winter season can pose a serious threat to your pets? Pre-existing health conditions, extreme temperatures, and harsh physical conditions can all have a negative impact on your pets. Here are some tips from a veterinarian for keeping your pets safe and healthy this winter.

Tip 1: Keep Them Warm with Extra Clothing

You may think the fur of your pets is naturally designed to stay warm in the cold winter weather. However, their coats may not be enough. Smaller dogs will usually need extra clothing to keep warm due to their smaller bodies. Dog breeds with shorter fur will also need a layer of clothing as they’re not as effective as longer fur in keeping their bodies warm. You also have to be cautious about your pet’s fur getting soaking wet as it takes away the insulating properties of the fur.

Tip 2: Check Paws

The harsh cold and dry surface can affect your dog’s paws. Make sure you check on them regularly if you’re taking your dog out on walks. You want to check for cracks, tears, and soreness. It might help to buy some traction socks. Not only do these socks protect their paws, it keeps them warm and also provides traction. If you see any paw injuries, it’s important to get your pet proper care at an animal hospital.

Tip 3: Get a Checkup Before Winter

It’s a smart idea to get a checkup for your pet before winter hits. You want to visit an animal hospital that will offer a full checkup, especially if your pet has been dealing with health issues recently. This is even more important if your pet is older. Older pets are more susceptible to getting sick due to pre-existing health issues and a weaker immune system.

Tip 4: Watch Out for Chemicals

You have to be very careful about your pets getting into contact with chemicals. They may lick or swallow antifreeze or de-icers if they see them in the street. After taking your pet out for a walk, check their paws and their bellies for any chemical residue. If you think they’ve been exposed to these toxic chemicals, take your pet to a veterinarian right away.
